The coordinator- MSc “Global Health- Disaster Medicine”, “Attikon” University General Hospital, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

The  School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens leads the consortium of the project via its Postgraduate Program “Global Health – Disaster Medicine”  and the Attikon General Hospital.  The MSc “Global Health – Disaster Medicine” is widely recognized and acknowledged on both national and international scale concerning global public health issues as well as emergency care in humanitarian and disaster settings. MSc “Global Health – Disaster Medicine” represents an interdisciplinary Program designed for highly qualified and motivated public health students, social scientists and researchers in the field of international health, humanitarian aid and disaster medicine as well as for other audiences with overall objective the promotion of knowledge and scientific evidence in these areas. Participating departments from Attikon Hospital are the following:

The University of Crete is a multi-disciplinary, research-oriented publicly funded educational institution that was established in 1973. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Crete has a very strong academic track record, ranked #48 in 2014 among the world’s best young universities under the age of 50. The Faculty of Medicine has developed an active program of research in primary care practices and disease prevention and our faculty meet regularly to support knowledge and exchange.

The Clinic of Social and Family Medicine (CSFM) at the University of Crete was founded in 1984 by Professor Michael Fioretos, to meet the needs of the local population and to promote research into general practice/family medicine (GP/FM) and primary health care, the CSFM offers teaching and research opportunities to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has established a pioneering, and unique for Greece, PHC educational and teaching centre, currently providing undergraduate and postgraduate courses to medical students, but also specialised training to clinical and non-clinical researchers seeking to expand their research abilities on various primary health care fields. The Clinic is headed by Professor Christos Lionis, and consists of a vibrant team of individuals, working to deliver high-quality teaching and research in the field of GP/FM and primary health care.

The CSFM has raised the profile of PHC at national and international levels through its strong leadership and active involvement in numerous initiatives and various interventions, as well as national and EU-funded research projects, as documented by over 310 Medline indexed publications (please refer to the link for a full list of publications).

Colour Youth– Athens LGBTQ Youth Community is the only youth-led officially registered LGBTQ organization in Greece. Colour Youth has managed to establish itself as a responsible partner to both non-governmental and governmental institutions. Colour Youth aims to raise social awareness regarding LGBT community s? demands, apply institutional pressure for the modernization of the legal framework regarding gender identity and sexual orientation and create a strong youth community functioning as a shelter for every LGBT person. Colour Youth is a proud member of TGEU, ILGA-Europe, IGLYO, the Greek National Council Against Racism and Intolerance & the Greek Racist Violence Recording Network.

Positive Voice‘s mission statement is to defend the rights of people living with HIV, to deal with the spread of HIV/AIDS, as well as with the restriction of its social and economic consequences in Greece. Since 2009, Positive Voice implements a wide range of community-based interventions setting as their main priority the empowerment of the key populations but also with the aim to raise awareness, enhance prevention and promote testing regarding HIV disease. Positive Voice is combining HIV destigmatization training along with LGBTQI awareness, sex worker’s rights’ awareness, harm reduction etc. In this framework, the organization has designed interventions for almost all the vulnerable towards HIV populations, such as men who have sex with men (MSM), injecting drug users (IDUs), incarcerated people, trans people and sex workers.

Orlando LGBT+ mental health beyond the stigma is the first legally recognized scientific organization in Greece specializing in mental health of LGBT+ individuals. Its main purpose is to promote the scientific approach on LGBT+ mental health that is structured on the idea of full depathologization of sexual orientation and gender identity, respecting self-identification and human rights. Orlando is committed to tackling discrimination and any human rights violation that constitute the main risk factor for the mental health and well-being of LGBT+ people.

Hellenic Medical Students International Committee is an independent committee, non- profitable, non-governmental and non-partizan, founded in 1958 from medical students. HelMSIC consists of 7 local committees, one in each Greek city with a Medical School. Its activities are often organised in cooperation with other organisations such as Doctors Without Borders, KETHEA, Doctors of the World, AIESEC as well as members of the academic community. HelMSIC is an active member of IFMSA – International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations and EMSA – European Students’ Association. Through its participation in international students’ organisations, HelMSIC is the only organisation that represents Greek medical students abroad.
